To perform a search in MIMIC, select the Search Database ![]()
button:

The next window displays two tabs: Tree View and Search.
In the Tree View, drill down to find and add the desired symbol information to the Worksheet. Select the plus or minus signs to open or close the folder and symbol buttons.
Single or multiple symbol selections may be added to the Worksheet. Add the symbol IGBBL21 to the Worksheet by drilling down the folders using the path: "TopRelation:Energy:NaturalGas:HenryHub:Platts" and opening the symbol selection IGBBL21. Note that the symbol name will be uppercase. For information on symbol naming conventions, see the “Database and Data Guidelines” chapter in the document Data and Development Guide.
Click the Expand button to view the available columns for this symbol. The default column is indicated by a hollow red diamond.
Double-click on a column to add the symbol to the worksheet. For this example, select the column Index.
Multiple selections may be made of symbols or columns using either the Ctrl Key or Shift Key. Let’s add 2 more symbols to the Worksheet. Open the symbols IGBBL00 and IGBBL04. Using the Ctrl key, highlight the column Open for symbol IGBBL00 and the column Index for symbol IGBBL04. After highlighting the columns, right-click the mouse and choose Select from the pop-up display.
The symbol information is added to the Worksheet.
You do not have to go down to the column level to add symbols. If you highlight the symbol names, right-click and choose Select then the default columns for the symbols will be used. |
Clear the Worksheet area by selecting the “New” button from the Worksheet toolbar. Do not save the Worksheet.
Next, select the Search tab. To perform a search, enter a symbol name in the Search field and press Enter to begin searching the database for your symbol. Entries are not case sensitive by default.
Select the Search Options

button to see a list of search options. You can
either search for a symbol name or search in the description field by
selecting Symbols or Description from the pull-down list. The last
active tab used in searching will be displayed when performing a new
search.
If you already know your symbol, but simply want to locate its
directory path, enter the symbol name in the field and with Symbols selected, select Enter or select the
button.
The search results are listed by Symbol, Path and Description. To have a particular result mapped in the Tree View, select the desired result, right-click with the mouse and select Locate in Tree.
The Tree View displays with the path to the symbol.
If you have a description, you can search by entering the
keyword word or phrase in the search field. Next select the Search Options
button and choose Descriptions from the list.
Searching for the term “henry hub” would list 100 unique results. 100 is the maximum amount of results that will display for a search.
To search for an instance of "Henry Hub" as a spot price off the
Platts publication, use the Custom
Narrow feature to browse the hierarchy and only search in
the Energy:Natural Gas folder. To do
this, enter "henry hub", in the Search field, then from the search option list
(using the
button) select Custom
Narrow.
In the Custom Narrow area, open the Energy folder, and then open the NaturalGas folder. Make sure the NaturalGas folder is highlighted.
Select the Start Search

button to start the search.
Scroll down the list of results and select the symbol IGBBL21. Double-clicking on a column will add the symbol information to the Worksheet. To add multiple symbols and columns use the Shift or Ctrl keys to select the columns then press Enter to enter the selections in the Worksheet. (Another method is to right-click on the selected columns and choose Select.)
The last entry in the search pull-down is Search Options. The following search options and rules may be applied when searching by description or by symbol.
Case Sensitive – The search will only match the supplied case.
Include Symbols – The symbol is included in the criteria.
Include Categories – The category description is included in the criteria.
Show Path in Table – The path to the symbol is included in the results.
The following search criteria may be used:
Asterisk “*” – The asterisk is a wildcard. Note that typing “Henry Hub*” without a wildcard at the beginning will return strings that begin with “Henry Hub” versus strings that include “Henry Hub”.
Period “.” – Should not be used as a wildcard; it will be interpreted as a period.
Question mark “?”– The question mark is a wild card to change a single character.
